The Lost Diary of Aunt Unice
Storm tossed and tattered, this piece represents the story of Aunt Unice, whose deepest longing was to be known and embraced for who she truly is. Here she discloses secrets she wasn't brave enough to share before her life was tragically lost at sea. Her tale was inspired by the song of Liz Fronduti, "Edge of the World". Elements include: cardboard/encaustic book covers with a black velvet spine, pages comprised of found objects, fabrics, papers and words, and photographic images printed on silk, displayed on a wooden stand.
Edge of the World
My children played with their orchestra at a nursing home at Christmas. The scene and sounds, the weight of mortality juxtaposed with the festive lightheartedness of the young made an impression that stayed with me long after that Saturday.
The iconic sunken ship from the past and her real and imagined passengers represent all of us in our striving for a life that is beautiful and meaningful while we know that time is running out. The tune that we sing to ourselves and each other in our hopes and fears is an echo of the song that surrounds us and resonates throughout the universe. Love is eternal. We are not alone.
Collaborating with H.J. Studio was a beautiful reminder of strength through artistic community. Creating together. The somber string quartet on the deck of a doomed ship is woven with the mysterious and playful life of the imaginary Aunt Unice. And in another lifetime, my own life is intertwined with my friend’s through our tragedies and joys.
